My Life Took A Turn in 1989

By Nanyang Li

The author, Li Nanyang, shares a similar background with Xi Jinping.  Their fathers were purged by the Chinese Communist Party when they were both 9 years old. After the Cultural Revolution, they returned to public life and became close friends.  As her father’s reinstallation, Li Nanyang went to Beijing to work at the Institute of High Energy Physics as an engineer. After 1989, she left China with her father’s encouragement and continued her career as a magnet engineer in CERN, SLAC and LBNL. This book features original essays that reflect the CCP indoctrination on the generation of Li Nanyang and Xi Jinping, as well as Li Nanyang’s personal journey of profound disillusionment with the Party that ultimately led to her decision to China. Of particular historical significance are the interviews with the former secretary of Zhao Ziyang, the Chinese leader who was removed for opposing the Tiananmen Square crackdown, and conversations held with key officials from the Youth Cadre Bureau of the Central Organization Department - the organization that helped select China's current leaders.
